Missouri State's Hoegg Tallies Third Game Winner of Season
Oct. 8, 2013
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Missouri State men’s soccer team (6-3-1) avenged an early season loss at Belmont (4-4-2) by defeating the Bruins at Plaster Field 1-0 on Tuesday night.
Despite not being able to convert a few attacking opportunities early in the match, the offense was encouraging for the Bears.
In the 29’ minute, Emmerich Hoegg received a pass at the top of the box which Brandon Barbero had flicked on from James Thomas. Hoegg quickly spun towards the net and buried a shot to the far post giving the Bears the game’s only goal.
“As the offense goes, [we] just practice it and get better,” said Hoegg after the game. “Sometimes [we] have two-a-days, coming back at nine or ten at night and practicing finishing and moving off the ball. Overall our attack is just increasing.”
The redshirt sophomore reclaimed sole possession at the top of the Missouri State season scoring list with his third goal of the season. All three of Hoegg’s goals were game winners for the Bears, being the difference in 1-0 wins against Incarnate Word, Nebraska-Omaha, and Belmont.
The Bruins, who had defeated the Missouri State in overtime earlier in the season, did not give up however. Late in the game, the Belmont attack posed several threats on the Missouri State defense. Despite a hectic final five minutes in the defensive third, the Bears were able to run out the clock and walked off the field with three points in front of the season high crowd of 608 people.
The Bears return to Missouri Valley Conference play in a tough road match at Drake evening. Both teams will come into Saturday’s game with a 1-0 MVC record. Live stats will be available through the Drake men’s soccer website.
