McBride earns Valley golf honor
Missouri State's Jay McBride has been named Missouri Valley Conference Golfer of the Week after winning the Missouri Intercollegiate last week at Sunrise Beach, Mo. The sophomore from Lebanon, Mo., came from behind to claim his first collegiate title, shooting 73-70-71--214 for a three-stroke victory at The Club at Porto Cima. He shares the weekly honor with Ryan Spears of Wichita State, who won the Air Force Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo. McBride entered the final round in second place, three strokes off the pace, but his final-round one-under-par 71 gave him a three-shot win over UMKC's Alex Hogben.
McBride, who was third on the squad in scoring average last season with a 75.25 mark, led the Bears to a second-place finish in the 18-team field. They shot 299-295-302--896, 13 behind champion UMKC.
