MSU Will Host Two Valley Events in 2014-15
May 29, 2014
ST. LOUIS – Missouri State University has been selected to host a pair of conference championship events during the 2014-15 academic year, the Missouri Valley Conference announced Thursday (May 29).
For the first time in 20 years, the Bears will host the MVC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, May 15-17, while MSU will also serve as the host institution at the MVC Men’s Golf Championship held at Lake of the Ozarks, April 27-28.
"We’re pleased that The Valley has selected us to host these events next year,” said Missouri State Director of Athletics Kyle Moats. “This will give us an opportunity to showcase the new Betty and Bobby Allison South Stadium on our campus and will be a premier event right in the heart of our campus.
“We also look forward to hosting at Porto Cima again. It's an excellent test of golf in a beautiful area, and we greatly appreciate the opportunity to serve as the host for that event."
Betty and Bobby Allison South Stadium is still under construction, just south of JQH Arena on the main MSU campus in Springfield. When completed, the soccer and track complex will have 1,000 permanent seats with designed room for portable seating areas along the main straightaway. The lighted facility will also have a state-of-the-art scoreboard, two locker rooms, press box, concessions area and artificial turf infield.
Construction is expected to be completed on the facility later this summer and will also serve as the home of various student recreational and intramural events as well as MSU men’s and women’s soccer.
Missouri State has hosted the MVC Outdoor Track & Field meet just once when the event was held at Plaster Sports Complex in 1995. MSU also served as the host for the 1991 Gateway Conference (women’s) track finals in 1991 at Plaster.
On the golf side, The Club at Porto Cima is a Nicklaus Signature Course and has an overall course rating of 74.2 and a slope rating of 141. The Sunrise Beach course features Zoysia fairways and Bent grass tees and greens with a championship distance of 7,036 yards. Opened in 2000, the course has been called by Golf Digest as one of the best private golf courses in America.
Missouri State hosted the 2013 MVC Women’s Golf Championship at Porto Cima and most recently hosted the Men’s Golf Championship in 2011, also at Porto Cima.
Other championship sites announced by MVC Commissioner Doug Elgin for 2014-15 are: Individual Tennis at Des Moines, Iowa; Cross Country at Carbondale, Ill.; Women’s Soccer at Normal, Ill.; Men’s Soccer at Peoria, Ill.; Volleyball at Cedar Falls, Iowa; Women’s Swimming & Diving at Carbondale, Ill.; Indoor Track & Field at Cedar Falls, Iowa; Women’s Golf at Burlington, Iowa; Team Tennis at Evansville, Ind.; Softball at Wichita, Kan.; and Baseball at Wichita, Kan. The MVC Men’s Basketball Championship will celebrate its 25th year in St. Louis this year at Scottrade Center, while the Women’s Basketball Championship will return to Family Arena in St. Charles for the eighth year.
All site awards are subject to ratification at the Missouri Valley Conference Presidents’ Council meeting, which takes place June 6.
