Straub Earns MVC Leadership and Service Award
April 30, 2014
ST. LOUIS -- In an effort to honor the achievements of exceptional student-athletes, the Missouri Valley Conference has created the MVC Leadership & Service Award (formerly the Good Neighbor Award). Missouri State men’s golfer Eric Straub is among 10 student-athletes named by Commissioner Doug Elgin as the honorees for the 2014 spring season.
A senior from Paducah, Ky., Straub has improved his scoring average by nearly two strokes from a year ago to 75.90 and has competed in every tournament for the Bears this season. Straub recorded a career best finish at the SIUE Derek Dolenc Invitational this year, where he tied for fifth and shot 74-74-70—218 to open his senior season.
In addition to leading on the course, Straub has excelled in the classroom and in the community. Straub has been named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll nine consecutive times, has been named a Maroon & White Scholar-Athlete for the past four years, and is a three-time member of the Dean’s List. Straub’s community service and volunteering includes Miles for Myles 5K, Unite to Read reading at York Elementary, and assisting at the Boys and Girls Club.
In order to be eligible for the award, the student-athlete must be in good academic standing, must demonstrate good citizenship through good sportsmanship and significant community service, and must participate in a sport, during the season of recognition. The Valley recognizes 10 student-athletes three times annually (fall, winter, spring), for a total of 30 honorees. Institutions select their MVC Leadership & Service Award honorees.
