MSU Men's Golf Team Set to Host Missouri Valley Championship

SUNRISE BEACH, Mo. -The Missouri State men's golf team is preparing to host the 2011 Missouri Valley Conference Championship, April 25-26. This year's meet will be held at the Club at Porto Cima in Sunrise Beach, a Jack Nicklaus designed facility.

Coach Neal Stafford's Bears were picked to finish second at the 2011 MVC meet in the pre-tournament coaches poll. The Bears finished sixth at last season's championship, but are coming off a break-through campaign. MSU has won two meets in 2010-11 and finished in the top five at seven different events.

According to GolfStat, Missouri State junior Will Hogan is the top ranked golfer in The Valley. Versus par, Hogan averages +1.23 over this season, while sophomore Daily Young, who is ranked fifth in the MVC, averages +2.35. The tandem have combined to win the MVC Golfer of the Week honors five times this season.

Missouri State has not won an MVC title since 1993. If the pre-championship rankings hold true, it will mark the Bears highest finish since 2000, when they finished second.

The nine participating teams will play 36 holes on Monday, April 25, beginning with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.  The tournament concludes with 18 holes on Tuesday. Reigning champion Wichita State was selected as the pre-tournament favorite.

Porto Cima opened in 2000. Over the last 10 years, the course has hosted several Missouri Golf Association Championships and the annual Missouri Intercollegiate. Recently Golf Digest recognized The Club at Porto Cima as the one of the best private golf courses in America.
