OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Four Bears' golfers finished in the top 30 at UMKC’s Bill Ross Intercollegiate on Tuesday (Oct. 16) to help guide Missouri State men’s golf to a fourth-place showing at the two-day event. For the first time in his MSU career, junior Nick Langley was the Bears’ top finisher as he finished in a three-way tie for 10th place.
Missouri State (290-298-298—886) placed fourth overall in the 14-team field, finishing behind host UMKC (870), North Dakota State (872) and Arkansas State (881). The Bears stayed put in the team standings after the first day of competition and ranked first among the MVC teams present at the tournament (UNI, Drake, Bradley, Creighton). Arkansas State’s Easton Key claimed medalist honors as he shot 6-under-par for the tournament (69-71-70—210).
Langley, who led the Bears on the first day of action, tied for 10th at 3-over (70-72-77—219) on the par 72 layout at the Milburn Country Club. The junior, who MSU’s top finisher, recorded a career-best 54-hole total, surpassing his previous mark by three strokes.
Senior Daily Young carded the Bears’ second-best three-round total with a 72-72-74—220. He finished in a three-way tie for 13th.
The late-round surges from freshman Joey Johnson and redshirt-junior Eric Straub, vaulted the MSU pair into a tie for 28th. After the first two rounds, Johnson was tied for 44th and Straub was 49th. Consistent play from Straub earned him the Bears’ best round on Tuesday, as he shot a 1-over-par 73 with 17 pars and one bogey. For the tournament, Straub carded a 76-76-73—225, while Johnson (75-76-74—225) also shot his best 18 holes of the tournament in the final round.
Freshman Mitch Mather tied for 42nd after posting a 73-77-77—227.
Missouri State men’s golf is back in action at Austin Peay State’s F&M Bank Intercollegiate, Oct. 22-23.
