OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Missouri State men’s golf team carded its second-lowest 18-hole score of the season, 290, in the opening round of the Bill Ross Intercollegiate on Monday (Oct. 15), and sits in fourth out of the 14 teams through 36 holes. Firing a two-round mark of 588 (+12) at the Milburn Country Club (7054-yard, par 72), the Bears find themselves within striking distance of the tournament’s top contenders entering Tuesday’s final round.

Missouri State trails host and leader UMKC by 16 shots. North Dakota State and Arkansas State sit in third, respectively. The Bears are just three strokes behind third-place Arkansas State and trail NDSU by 12.

MSU’s hot start was in part due to a career round by junior Nick Langley. To kick off the 54-hole tournament, Langley recorded four birdies to shoot a 2-under-par 70 and was tied for second after the first 18. The Manchester, Mo. native is currently fifth on the individual leaderboard after leading the Bears with a two-round total of 142.

Also joining Langley in the top-20 is two-time MVC Golfer of the Week Daily Young. The senior, who captured medalist honors at Kansas State’s Jim Colbert Intercollegiate on Oct. 16, carded a 72-74—146. His score through 36 puts him in a tie for 14th and seven strokes behind the individual leader, Samuel Matthew of South Dakota.

A strong opening round for freshman Mitch Mather has the first-year player tied for 37th at 6-over par. The Lebanon, Mo. native recorded a 73-77—150 and finished with two birdies in each round.

Rounding out the Bears’ five are Joey Johnson and Eric Straub, who are tied for 44th and 49th, respectively, with 18 holes remaining. Johnson, a freshman from Ozark, Mo., shot a 75-76—151, while the redshirt-junior recorded a two-round total of 152 (76-76).

The final round of play will begin Tuesday morning with 18 holes left to decide the tournament. Tee times begin at 8:30 a.m. CT.
