HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Behind Daily Young and Will Hogan’s top-five performances, the Missouri State men’s golf team rallied back into second-place finish at the 2012 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championship Tuesday (May 1). The Bears posted a team score of 895 (300-299-296) and tied for the best third-round score, while pre-championship favorite Wichita State ran away with the team title, winning by 18 strokes. The Shockers earned their fifth MVC men’s golf championship in-a-row.

After 36 holes on Monday, the Bears were in sixth place, but just five shots out of second place. Missouri State finished the tournament seven strokes ahead of third-place Northern Iowa. Creighton and Illinois State placed fourth and fifth, respectively.

Playing at Prairie Dunes Country Club, Young finished the tournament with a 9-over-par score of 219 (71-71-77). With five holes to go, the Springfield native held a three-stroke lead, but bogeyed on three of the final five to surrender the medalist honors to Wichita State’s Hunter Sparks. Hogan moved up three spots on the individual leaderboard into a tie for fifth with a 4-over 74 on Tuesday.

Making the biggest improvement from Monday was Missouri State’s Jordan McLaurin. The senior from Ironton, Mo. posted the best third-round score of any golfer with a 2-over-72. He jumped 19 spots in the standings into a tie for 23rd. Also in the bunch tied for 23rd was Bears’ golfer Eric Straub, who registered the second-best third-round score (3-over-73). Freshman Mark Karlsen rounded out the Bears’ golfers, carding a 78-77-82 (237).

Following play at Prairie Dunes Country Club, the league named Young and Hogan to the MVC All-Conference team.
