Bears Eighth After First Day at Valley Golf Tournament

Missouri State is in eighth place after 36 holes at the Missouri Valley Conference Men's Golf Championship in Cape Girardeau, Mo. The Bears shot 310-305--615 on Monday (Apr. 29), but have a chance to move up several spots with a good final round Tuesday.
Individually, senior Daily Young was the bright spot for MSU, carding 73-76--149 to place him seventh in his first competition in nearly a month after sitting out the past two tournaments due to injury.
Freshman standout Joey Johnson is tied for 14th after posting 74-77--151, while junior Nick Langley is tied for 33rd at 82-75--157. Freshmen Mitch Mather and Brik Brauburger are tied for 39th with 160 totals; Mather with 81-79 and Brauburger at 83-77.
Pre-tournament favorite Wichita State is running away with the team title, having built a 24-stroke lead over second-place Illinois State. The Shockers fired 288-281--569, seven under par at the par 72, 7175-yard Dalhousie Golf Club. They also have the top four players in the individual standings, led by Louis Cohen Boyer, who shot 69-72--141.
Illinois State has 593, while Southern Illinois is fourth at 600. Only six shots separate fourth-place Drake and the eighth-place Bears. Drake is at 609, followed by Bradley in fifth at 611, with Evansville and Northern Iowa tied at 612 and MSU with 615. Creighton is last in the nine-team field at 629.
Tuesday's final round begins with tee times at 8:30 a.m.
