April 28, 2014
SILVIS, Ill. - Missouri State sits in a tie for sixth place after the first round of the Missouri Valley Conference Men's Golf Championship. The Bears carded 311 in the opening round of the tournament.
The MVC Championship was scheduled to complete two rounds on Monday, but lightning and rain forced Valley officials to suspend play at 4:29 pm at TPC Deere Run in the middle of the second round.
Through one completed round, Wichita State holds the lead after opening with 291. Northern Illinois (296) and Illinois (297) are a separated by a stroke for second and third, much like Bradley (305) and Southern Illinois (306) are for fourth and fifth place. Missouri State and Evansville (311) are two strokes ahead of Loyola (313). Drake rounds out the nine-school field after shooting 318.
Individually, Wichita State's Chandler Rusk leads the conference after opening with a 70. Northern Iowa's Dustin Atkinson and Illinois State's Tyler Gentilella are knotted at second after each carding 71.
Missouri State sophomore Mitch Mather opened the tournament at par and is tied with Illinois State's Wils Hawn for fourth at 72. Mather is coming in hot after finishing tied for second at the TSU Big Blue Intercollegiate, the final regular season tournament two weeks ago, and earning MVC Golfer of the Week.
Teams will resume play Tuesday with a shotgun start at 8 a.m., and then move into the final round to determine the conference champion.
