Men's Golf Finishes Seventh in Spring Opener

The Missouri State men's golf team finished seventh of 14 teams Tuesday (Feb.5) in its first tournament of the 2013 spring season. The Bears posted 290-298-298--886 at the Rice Intercollegiate at Westwood Golf Club in Houston, Texas.
UTSA rallied to claim the team title, overtaking overnight leader Florida Atlantic with a final-round 285 to FAU's 299. UTSA shot 862 for the tournament, while FAU had 871. Rice and Stephen F. Austin tied for third at 876, followed by Houston Baptist (883), UMKC (884), the Bears, Sam Houston State (890), McNeese State (895) and Louisiana-Monroe (901) rounding out the top 10.
The Bears, who entered the day in fifth place, were led by freshman Joey Johnson, who tied for 12th after shooting 69-72-76--217. Senior Daily Young tied for 25th and had MSU's low round of the day (73), recording 74-74-73--221. Junior Nick Langley was next for the Bears, tying for 35th with 71-77-76--224, while freshman Mitch Mather carded 76-77-73--226 for a tie for 44th. Junior Eric Straub finished 72nd, posting 77-75-84--236. Overnight co-leader Richard Donegan of FAU captured medalist honors with 71-66-73--210.
The Bears are idle for the next two weeks before returning to action Feb. 25-26 at the Washington State Snowman Getaway in suburban Phoenix, Ariz.
