The Missouri State men's golf team is in fifth place after 36 holes at its 2013 spring opener, the Rice Intercollegiate in Houston, Texas. The Bears, led by freshman Joey Johnson, posted 290-298--588 in Monday's (Feb. 4) action at the Westwood Golf Club.

Johnson is in fourth place overall after firing 69-72--141, three under par. He trails co-leaders Richard Donegan of Florida Atlantic and Jeff Wibawa of Rice after each notched 137 totals.

Senior Daily Young and junior Nick Langley were next for MSU after compiling 148 totals and a tie for 33rd. Young posted 74-74, while Langley birdied five of his last six holes to shoot 71 in the morning round before a 77 in the afternoon.

Junior Eric Straub is tied for 48th with 77-75--152 and freshman Mitch Mather is tied for 52nd at 76-77--153.

Florida Atlantic holds a five-stroke lead in the team race after shooting 286-286--572, with UTSA in second at 577. Host Rice is third in the 14-team field with 580, followed by Houston Baptist at 586, the Bears, UMKC (589), Stephen F. Austin (590), Sam Houston State (592), McNeese State (599) and Louisiana-Monroe (603) rounding out the top 10.

Texas-Pan American and Arkansas State are 11th at 604, with Nicholls State 13th with 607, and North Dakota State 14th at 612.

Tuesday's final round is scheduled for an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
