2012 Capital One Academic All-America Division I Football Team

TOWSON, Md. -- Missouri State sophomore Caleb Schaffitzel (S, Fair Grove, Mo.) has been named to the Capital One Academic All-America Division I Football Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Thursday (Dec. 6).

 Schaffitzel is a second-team selection and is one of just three sophomores on the 48-man team that includes representatives from both the FBS and FCS ranks. He becomes the 10th Missouri State football player to earn Academic All-America honors, and sixth at the Division I level, most recently achieved by David Arkin who was a second-team honoree in 2010.

 A first-team All-Missouri Valley Football Conference selection and MVFC All-Academic first team pick, Schaffitzel registered a team-high 109 tackles this season for the Bears with 5 interceptions with 11 passes defended. He is tied for 9th nationally in interceptions per game (0.45) and 23rd in tackles per game (9.91) in this week's NCAA Division I FCS statistical rankings. He was also a two-time MVFC Defensive Player of the Week, two-time CFPA National Defensive Back of the Week and one-time CFPA National Defensive Player of the Week this season.



 The Sports Network named him as its National Defensive Player of the Week on Nov. 5 for his efforts against No. 1 North Dakota State in which he broke an MSU record and tied an MVFC record with a 100-yard interception return for a touchdown.

 On Dec. 4, the on-line site, named Schaffitzel to its FCS All-America third team. He also earned MSU's Media Player of the Year, Team MVP and Lifter of the Year Award at Missouri State's annual team awards ceremony on Dec. 2.

 Schaffitzel is a Wildlife Conservation and Management major with a 3.97 grade-point average. He advanced to the Academic All-America ballot after earning All-District 6 first-team honors on Nov. 8.  District 6 includes all Division I FBS and FCS programs in the states of Arkansas, Iowa, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

 South Dakota State running back Zach Zenner, also a sophomore second-teamer, is the only other MVFC player on this year's Academic All-America list. The team includes one other sophomore, punter Mike Sadler of Michigan State, as well as six juniors and 39 seniors or graduate students.

 Barrett Jones, an offensive lineman from Alabama was selected as the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® Player of the Year for Division I football.
