Heaston Earns Valley All-Newcomer Team Honors
Nov. 27, 2012
ST. LOUIS -- Missouri State freshman running back Ryan Heaston (Cordova, Tenn.) has been named to the Missouri Valley Football Conference All-Newcomer Team, the league announced Tuesday (Nov. 27).
One of just 23 league players named to the team, Heaston was a two-time MSU Offensive Player of the Week, a three-time MSU Media Player of the Week, two-time CFPA National RB Performer of the Week honorable mention pick, and two-time College Sports Journal FCS Freshman of the Week honorable mention selection this season.
He was also one of 22 players on the Jerry Rice Award Watch List for the top freshman in the Division I FCS ranks and was also on the College Football Performance Awards Freshman of the Year Watch List.
He finished his first season at MSU with 84 carries for 424 yards and compiled those numbers in basically five games. He was injured for the team's final five contests and saw action in just one of those games with three total carries. Despite his limited action down the stretch, his season yardage matched the eighth-best freshman total ever by a Bears' rusher. Likewise his 148 rushing yards at South Dakota State (Sept. 29) and 126 ground yards against Southern Illinois (Sept. 22) ranked second and sixth, respectively, for single-game rushing yards by a freshman.
With 68 total picks, Missouri State now has the third-most All-Newcomer selections -- behind Western Illinois (72) and Illinois State (71) -- since the MVFC began announcing the squad in 1994. Illinois State had five selections to this year's team, while North Dakota State had four.
The Bears will recognize Heaston and its other outstanding individual performers this Sunday at 6 p.m., at the team's annual Awards Banquet at Plaster Student Union. Tickets are $20 and can be reserved by contacting the MSU Football Office at (417) 836-5343.
