SPRINGFIELD -- Missouri State sophomore defensive back Caleb Schaffitzel (Fair Grove, Mo.) has been named to the Capital One Academic All-District Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced Thursday (Nov. 8).

Schaffitzel, who has a 3.97 GPA in Wildlife and Conservation Management, is one of 24 honorees from District 6 which includes all Division I FBS and FCS programs in the states of Arkansas, Iowa, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. He now advances to Academic All-America voting along with All-District selections from eight districts. The Academic All-America team will be announced on Dec. 6.

He has received numerous conference and national honors over the last two weeks, including back-to-back Missouri Valley Football Conference Defensive Player of the Week laurels and back-to-back National Defensive Back of the Week distinction by the College Football Performance Awards. The CFPA tabbed Schaffitzel as its National Defensive Player of the Week earlier this week. The Sports Network also named him as its National Defensive Player of the Week this week.

The Bears' starting strong safety is tied for eighth nationally in interceptions per game (0.50), including five picks in the last three weeks, and is tied for 16th in the country in tackles per game (10.50). His 100-yard interception return for a touchdown last Saturday against North Dakota State broke an MSU record and tied an MVFC record for longest INT return.

Missouri State (3-7, 3-4 MVFC) is idle this week before returning to action on Nov. 17 at Northern Iowa in the team's season finale in Cedar Falls.
