MVC Leadership and Service Award - Fall 2013

ST. LOUIS - Junior football standout Caleb Schaffitzel has been named Missouri State's fall recipient of the 2013 MVC Leadership and Service Award, the league announced on Wednesday. Formerly the Good Neighbor Award, the award was created by The Valley in an effort to honor the achievements of exceptional student-athletes.

Schaffitzel currently leads the Bears (4-6, 4-2 MVFC) and ranks third overall in the MVFC in tackles per game (9.1) after earning All-America honors and the NCAA FCS Defensive Back of the Year Award from the College Football Performance Awards last fall. The Fair Grove, Mo., product leads the conference in interceptions (4) and passes defended (1.67 per game), while averaging nearly 10 tackles per outing in league play.

Earlier this season, Schaffitzel reached the 200-career tackle mark in just his 24th collegiate game. He is the Bears' active leader with 270 total stops to go with his 26 passes defended in that span. He has one of the Bears' FCS-leading five interception returns for touchdowns, bringing back a 19-yard pick-six against top-ranked North Dakota State on Oct. 12 to eclipse MSU's career record for interception return yardage (259).

In order to be eligible for the award, the student-athlete must be in good academic standing, must demonstrate good citizenship through good sportsmanship and significant community service, and must participate in a sport, during the season of recognition. The Valley will recognize 10 student-athletes three times annually (fall, winter, spring), for a total of 30 honorees. Institutions select their MVC Leadership & Service Award honorees.

A wildlife conservation and management major, Schaffitzel was a Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-District pick in 2012. He has also been named to the MSU Athletic Director's Honor Roll six times throughout his career, while also earning three MVFC Academic Honor Roll (2010, 2011 and 2012) citations and a pair of MVFC Commissioner's Academic Excellence Awards (2011 and 2012). Schaffitzel has remained active in leadership roles off the field as well, volunteering with the Boys & Girls Clubs and assisting with Healthy Heroes and Habitat for Humanity.
