Nov. 3, 2013
ST. LOUIS -- Missouri State outside linebacker Jeremy Springer (Jr., Villa Rica, Ga.) has been named Missouri Valley Football Conference co-Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Sunday (Nov. 3) afternoon. Springer's efforts helped the Bears to a 49-7 conference win over visiting Indiana State on Saturday in Springfield.
The transfer from Dodge City (Kan.) Community College, snagged two interceptions, including a 51-yard touchdown return in the third quarter, to help Missouri State claim its third straight MVFC victory. Springer later halted another Indiana State drive with a 34-yard interception return in the fourth quarter, giving him 85 total interception return yards in the game. He also contributed a pair of tackles from his outside linebacker post, helping MSU's defense outgain Indiana State's offense in the game by a 211-210 margin.
Springer tallied half of the Bears' four interceptions in the game, and had one of the club's three interception returns for touchdowns which established new MSU and MVFC records.
In Saturday's victory over the Sycamores, Missouri State compiled a school record 211 yards in interception returns with touchdown returns of 53, 51 and 73 yards in the third quarter. That yardage total pushed the Bears' season total to 22 take-aways and 361 interception return yards. The three defensive scores in one period also helped the Bears break a school record with 28 third-quarter points.
Also earning conference honors on Sunday were Youngstown State quarterback Kurt Hess (Offensive Player of the Week), Thomas Kinney of Southern Illinois (Special Teams Player of the Week),
Martin Ruiz of YSU (Newcomer of the Week) and Tevin Allen of Illinois State (co-Defensive Player of the Week).
The Bears (4-6, 4-2 MVFC) will return to action Saturday at Southern Illinois (5-4, 3-2) for a key MVFC matchup starting at 2 p.m.
