Missouri State vs. Western Illinois Postgame Quotes
Missouri State vs. Western Illinois Postgame Quotes
Coach Terry Allen on another the close game:
"We have been on the other end of so many of these games -- three of the games we have lost we were ahead in the fourth quarter - that when that clock finally hit zero, I don't know if it was celebration on our sideline or just relieve. We really feel that way. It was great, and I think it finally settled in with our players that they won when they were over singing with the students and the band. That was a great Homecoming victory."
On Austin Witmer making his first collegiate kick:
"He got his first kick and he made it. It was a big one, a huge one. It should be a great boost of confidence for him. He did a great job kicking off all day. That is great for Austin and I am really happy for him, really proud of him."
On Nick Canavan and the defense:
"Nick did a nice job. Nick is in there, we chose to play him a couple games ago, and he is gaining some more confidence out there. He runs hard. I think we won the sack battle. We got to their quarterback four times, and other than a couple big plays here and there, I think our defense played well. They did not play bad in the first half. They only gave up five first downs. I thought we played much better defensively."
On the running backs Chris Douglas (18 carries, 165 yards, 1 TD) and his 71-yard touchdown run:
"They can't catch him (Douglas). He is fast. He turned it on."
On the physical game:
"You saw it from the get-go. I thought we controlled the line of scrimmage. But it was a great football game, and they are a good football team. They were leading our league, but today I just felt that up front we were a more physical football team."
On the team's attitude after the close losses the past two weeks:
"Did you see our sideline? On those interceptions, they were so excited down there. With all the frustration they have been through, they greatest thing we said in the tunnel (after the game) was 'We don't have to get on a bus tonight and get home at three in the morning. So go enjoy this win with your family."
Jimmy Strong, Jr., Cornerback on the defensive performance:
"We came out and played really good. Our defensive backs really stepped up and forced them into some tough third downs. They really stepped up today. The whole secondary did. It was real good to get a win after three weeks of not finishing. Coach Bolks really told us to start finishing and we did today. Everyone is really happy with this win.:
Strong on his two interceptions:
"I was keying the quarterback and keying the receiver at the same time. I was on the hip of the receiver and when he cut back, the quarterback made a bad pass, and when they make a bad pass, you gotta make them pay."
Strong on responding to defensive criticism:
"It's a wonderful feeling. We've been giving up big yards and to come and stuff Western Illinois, one of the best teams in our league, it feels really good. We've been struggling, but we're on the right track now."
Antoine Wilkinson, Sr., Linebacker on his performance today (14 tackles, one sack):
We prepared well in practice. Everything we saw out there, we saw in practice. It didn't feel any different from practice.
Wilkinson on shutting down the run:
That's their main focus, they average a lot of yards on the ground. We really tried to come into this game and shut down the run.
Wilkinson on defensive performance:
We've been through a few tough weeks. We played with a lot of heart today. We flew around the field today and came out with a win.
Chris Douglas, Jr., Tailback on running performance:
A lot of teams know that we have success going to the outside, so they bring up their corners. Eventually, our wide receivers run them off. After a few hard runs inside, a big one is going to pop.
Stephen Johnson, Jr., Tailback, and Douglass on complementing each other:
Douglass: A lot of people would say that he is the power back and I'm the speed back, but Stephen has speed himself. We complement each other real well.
Johnson: Its good to have someone as fast a Chris, because I kind of am a power back. I like to be physical and get some contact. Once Chris gets in there he has another dimension. He can turn a one-yard gain into a 70-yard gain.
Douglass and Johnson on pushing each other:
Johnson: When I see him do good, it makes me want to do good. I know it's the same for him. It's just competing and trying to have fun at the same time.
Douglass: Yes, but I'm still better
Douglass on himself and Johnson having good games:
It is very important. The same thing happened two weeks ago. We both had good performances on the ground. You have to stop one of us, and today they couldn't stop either of us.
Johnson on bouncing back from a tough loss:
I take it hard when it happens, but you have to let it roll off your shoulders eventually. We came back this weekend prepared for this game and came away with a win, which is a really good thing to have.
Cody Kirby, Sr., Quarterback on Importance of this win:
This was a complete win; a total team win. We played well from start to finish. We had a great, supportive crowd out there. It was really important for us to get this win at home in front of a great crowd. They lifted us up and we gave them all we could, for them.
Kirby on team vision going forward:
We are by no means out of this thing. Our focus is one game at a time. We're going to enjoy this win, because It is a big one, but we come back tomorrow and start getting ready for the next game at home.
