MVFC Weekly Honors

ST. LOUIS - After turning in a career performance to lead a resurgent Missouri State offense Saturday at Murray State, Bears' senior running back Vernon Scott (Muskogeee, Okla.) has been named as the Missouri Valley Football Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced Sunday (Sept. 15).

Scott, who earned the MVFC's weekly offensive honor along with Indiana State quarterback Mike Perish, carried 26 times for a career-high 201 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead all players in MSU's 41-38 loss at Murray State. Scott notched the most rushing yards by a MSU player since Cody Pratt posted 217 yards vs. Drake on Sept. 2, 2004. His first TD from 25 yards out set the pace for the Bears, who registered 34 first downs and 578 total yards in the contest. His second score gave the Bears a 31-26 fourth-quarter lead and capped a 54-yard scoring drive with a three-yard carry.

Entering the contest with 47 yards rushing for the season, Scott wasted little time in sparking the Bears' ground attack, eclipsing his previous single-game rushing high before the end of the first half with 110 yards. Scott's effort paced a Missouri State game that totaled 366 yards on the ground after combining for just 193 rushing yards in its first two outings of the season.

Scott became the 14th Bear to surpass the 200-yard rushing plateau, and the first to do so during the Terry Allen era. His 201 yards rank 13th on Missouri State's all-time list of single-game rushing totals.

Also recognized by the MVFC on Sunday were linebacker Dallas Brown of South Dakota State (Defensive Player of the Week and Newcomer of the Week) and punter Nick Liste of Youngstown State (Special Teams Player of the Week).

The Bears conclude their non-conference slate next Saturday (Sept. 21) when they host nationally-ranked UCA at Plaster Field. Missouri State's "Salute to America" game kicks off at 6 p.m. and will include a reunion of the Bears' 1963 MIAA championship team. Tickets to the game are available through MissouriStateTix.com, by calling (417) 836-7678 or stopping by the Chevy Pickup Window at JQH Arena during regular box office hours.
