SPRINGFIELD -- Missouri State's first intrasquad scrimmage of the fall Saturday morning featured big plays on both sides of the ball as the offense produced 463 yards and five touchdowns, while the defense surrendered just over 3.0 yards per carry on the ground and came up with a pair of turnovers.
"It was a typical first scrimmage," said head coach Terry Allen. "We kept the mistakes to a minimum and nobody got injured, so that's always good. We're pretty efficient in our offense right now, and our defense played with a lot of confidence and intensity, and that's hopefully a sign of good things to come."
The star in the early going was freshman Phoenix Johnson (RB, Webb City, Mo.) who helped the second-team unit cap a 75-yard drive with a 24-yard touchdown carry as the first score of the scrimmage. Johnson later added a 1-yard touchdown run and finished with 45 yards on 8 carries, plus a 6-yard pass reception.
Marcelo Bonani (So., Lake Wales, Fla.) then helped cap a 61-yard scoring drive for the first-team offense, led by Kierra Harris (Jr., QB, Texarkana, Ark.), when he knocked through a 23-yard field goal. Bonani finished 2-for-3 on field goal attempts, including a successful 32 yarder.
Harris later hooked up with Eric Christophel (So., WR, Nixa ,Mo.) with a 31-yard TD strike to tally points on a quick, 2-play, 35-yard situational drive. Harris also had completions of 32 and 40 yards to all-conference receiver Dorian Buford (Sr., Florissant, Mo.) during the scrimmage and finished with an efficient 11-for-19 day through the air for 134 yards and no interceptions.
Buford led a cast of 12 Bear receivers with catches, snagging 6 receptions for 84 yards.
Senior quarterback Ashton Glaser (Springdale, Ark.) also had a touchdown pass when he connected with Ryan Boatright (RFr., TE, Tulsa, Okla.) on a 16-yard completion to cap a 20-yard scoring drive with the second unit. Glaser was 8-for-14 through the air for 80 yards.
The day's only other touchdown was a 3-yard push to paydirt by true freshman Calan Crowder (RB, Bartlesville, Okla.) who led the club with 12 carries for 53 yards on the day.
On the defensive side of the ball, Anthony Grady (Sr., DE, Texarkana, Ark.) had two of the squad's three sacks, while James Barnes (So., DE, St. Louis, Mo.) had the other one. Martin Montgomery (Sr., DE, Pine Bluff, Ark.) came up with the only fumble recovery of the session, while newcomer Brandon Cheaton (Jr., Middletown, Del.) who started two games at Delaware in 2011, ended the scrimmage with an athletic interception in the two-minute drill. Cheaton's return was whistled dead before he could return it all the way for a score.
The Bears will have Sunday off before returning to the field Monday morning for an 8:50 practice at Plaster Field as they being their final week of preseason camp before the fall semester begins Aug. 19.
