Five Bears Selected for MVFC Preseason Honors
July 29, 2014
ST. LOUIS - Missouri State has landed five players on the Missouri Valley Football Conference Preseason Team, the 10-member conference announced Tuesday (July 29) in advance of its annual preseason teleconference. Additionally, the Bears were picked to finish seventh by the league's coaches, media and sports information directors, the best showing for MSU in the Valley's preseason poll since it garnered the No. 5 slot in 2010.
All-America safety Caleb Schaffitzel (Sr., Fair Grove, Mo.) leads the Bears' contingent after earning first-team all-conference honors each of the last two seasons. Fellow preseason All-America and All-MVFC pick Robert Booker (Jr., Ozark, Mo.), was also a first-team All-MVFC selection in 2013, while linebacker Andrew Beisel (Sr., Fenton, Mo.) and offensive linemen Zack Cooley (Sr., Lebanon, Mo.) and Richard Galbierz (Sr., Fenton, Mo.) were tabbed for the Valley's 39-man preseason squad as well after earning All-MVFC honorable mention nods last fall.
The conference also announced its preseason poll, with three-time defending NCAA Division I FCS champion North Dakota State earning the top spot with 370 total points, including 24 of the 39 first-place votes. South Dakota State was picked second, narrowly edging UNI in both total points (330-324) and first-place votes (8-7). Youngstown State (240) and Southern Illinois (237) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, and Illinois State (197) landed in sixth ahead of the Bears, who received their highest point total (180) in the 29 years the MVFC has conducted a preseason poll. South Dakota (121), Western Illinois (96) and Indiana State (50) rounded out the order of projected finish.
The MVFC Preseason Teleconference is scheduled to get underway at 10 a.m. (Central) Tuesday, and ninth-year Missouri State head coach Terry Allen is slated to speak at 10:50 a.m. Media members may join the call by dialing (877) 393-4731.
Schaffitzel, Booker, Beisel, Cooley and Galbierz represent five of the Bears' 12 returning starters and 34 lettermen back from a team that tied for second in the MVFC last fall. MSU is set to open camp Wednesday (July 30), while Allen and the Bears will meet the local media at MSU's annual Media Day event on Monday, Aug. 4 at Plaster Stadium.
