MSU Tandem Earns Preseason All-America Honors
July 1, 2014
PHILADELPHIA – Missouri State standouts Caleb Schaffitzel (Sr., S, Fair Grove, Mo.) and Robert Booker (Jr., OC, Ozark, Mo.) were both named to The Sports Network Preseason FCS All-America team, the organization announced today (July 1).
Schaffitzel was a consensus first-team All-American, as well as a first-team Academic All-American, as a junior in 2013. The two-time All-Missouri Valley Football Conference safety led the Bears with 111 tackles to go with a team-high 4 interceptions. He ranked among the nation’s top defenders in several statistical categories, including 43rd in tackles and 31st in interceptions, while ranking second in the MVFC in both categories. He was a 2013 finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award, presented to the top defensive player in the FCS ranks, and was FCS Co-National Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 12, 2013 in the Bears win over No. 15 South Dakota State.
Booker started all 12 games at center for the Bears a year ago and carried out 98 percent of his assignments with an 84-percent overall grade and 86 knockdown blocks. The physical lineman was an All-MVFC first-team selection in 2013 as well as an Associated Press All-America third-team pick. He was named MVFC Offensive Lineman of the Week once last season after helping anchor a Bears offensive line that allowed the fewest sacks (1.12) and posted the second-best rushing offense (185.5) in conference games.
The pair of MSU standouts helps make up a solid collection of eight first-team picks on The Sports Network’s 2013 All-America Team. All told, 13 MVFC players made the three teams, which tied the Big Sky Conference for second most behind the Colonial Athletic Association’s 15 selections.
Fellow MVFC players joining Schaffitzel and Booker on the first team are: running backs David Johnson (UNI) and Zach Zenner (South Dakota State), SIU tight end MyCole Pruitt, offensive linemen Jack Rummells (UNI), kicker Thomas Kinney (SIU) as well as long snapper Chris Highland (Illinois State).
Coach Terry Allen’s Bears return 36 lettermen and 12 starters from a team that finished 5-3 in the highly-competitive MVFC race last season to tie for second place. The Bears open the 2014 campaign on Thursday, Aug. 28 at Northwestern (La.) State at 6 p.m. MSU will makes its debut in the newly-renovated Plaster Stadium and debut the new BearFest Village concept for the Saturday, Sept. 13 game against North Dakota.
