Twenty-six Missouri State Football Players Honored for Academics
ST. LOUIS -- The Missouri Valley Football Conference released its annual academic awards Tuesday (May 3), and has included 26 Missouri State University players among its list of honorees.
Topping the list of award recipients is senior David Arkin (OL, Wichita, Kan.) who is one of 23 players in the league to earn the President's Council Academic Award for achieving a minimum 3.5 GPA through the fall semester. Arkin graduated in December with a 3.66 grade point average in Construction Management and was picked by the Dallas Cowboys in the fourth round of last week's NFL Draft. President's Council Award recipients must be within 18 hours of graduation.
Fellow Bears Jordan Chiles (Jr., P, Hillsboro, Ill., 3.48, Exercise & Movement Science), Brent Chojnacki (Sr., OL, Florissant, Mo., 3.13, Physical Education), Jonathan Davis (Sr., TB, Tampa, Fla.), Kurt Kutter (So., OG, O'Fallon, Mo., 3.37, Undeclared), Jimmie Strong (Jr., CB, Texarkana, Texas), and Tim Williams (RFr., QB, Springfield, Mo., 3.45, Physical Education) were also recognized on the Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award list. The Commissioner's List includes players who have achieved a 3.2 GPA or better during the previous two semesters. Freshmen are not eligible for this honor.
Also recognized by the league were 26 players in the MVFC Honor Roll listing. These players all achieved a 3.0 GPA or better during the 2010 fall semester during the season of competition: Andre Anderson (So., CB, Muskogee, Okla.), Arkin, Duane Atteberry (So., WR, Buffalo, Mo.), Andrew Beisel (Fr., ILB, Fenton, Mo.), Joe Burgess (Fr., OL, Florissant, Mo.), Chiles, Chojnacki, Mike Crutcher (Fr., S, Wentzville, Mo.), Erik Dahl (Sr., OC, Olathe, Kan.), Davis, Justin Fuselier (Sr., WR, Tulsa, Okla.), Mitchell Jenkins (Fr., QB, Springfield, Mo.), Kutter, Anthony Lee (So., S, Bonner Springs, Kan.), Harrison Menke (So., OC, Joplin, Mo.), Derek Miller (Sr., FS, Olathe, Kan.), Wes Miller (Sr., TE, St. Joseph, Mo.), Caleb Schaffitzel (Fr., S, Fair Grove, Mo.), Wes Stammers (Jr., S, Owensville, Mo.), Geoff Stanford (Fr., ILB, Wichita, Kan.), Strong, Matt Swan (So., TE, Springfield, Mo.), Charlie Thomspon (Jr., OT, St. Louis, Mo.), Garrett Wade (So., DE, Lebanon, Mo.), Williams, and Austin Witmer (Fr., K, Grand Island, Neb.).
Head coach Terry Allen, who will begin his sixth season at the helm of the Bears, returns 9 starters, 35 lettermen and 62 total squad members from a 2010 team that finished 5-6 overall and tied for third (4-4) in the Missouri Valley Football Conference.
Missouri State will begin fall camp on August 4 and open its 2011 slate at Arkansas on Sept. 3. The season opener will be followed by non-conference games at Eastern Kentucky (Sept. 10) and Oregon (Sept. 17).
