CLEVELAND -- Missouri State wide receiver Jermaine Saffold (Sr., Grandview, Mo.) has agreed to terms with the Cleveland Browns to report as an undrafted free agent when its rookie camp opens in May.
Saffold was a two-time All-Missouri Valley Football Conference receiver and broke MSU season and career records for receiving yardage. He put together a solid performance at Missouri State's Pro Day on March 16, including a 4.36 40-yard dash. He later improved his position grade at Missouri Western's Pro Day on March 23 and then participated in a pre-draft workout with the Kansas City Chiefs in April.
As a senior, Saffold ranked 25th nationally in receiving yards per game (83.0) and grabbed 4.09 catches per game en route to breaking Missouri State's season (913) and career (2,221) yardage records for a receiver. He was an All-MVFC first-team pick in 2011 after earning All-MVFC second-team distinction as a junior.
During the 2011 campaign, he finished with 45 catches for 913 yards and matched a school record with 8 receiving touchdowns. He also set an MSU record with nine career 100-yard receiving games and was ranked in four conference categories, including scoring and all-purpose yards. He had nine catches of 20 or more yards this season, including six over 50 yards and a career-best 207-yard game against Illinois State at Plaster Field on Oct. 8.
He is expected to report to the Browns on May 10. Cleveland used one of its draft picks on a wide receiver when it claimed Miami (Fla.) standout Travis Benjamin with the 100th overall pick early in the fourth round.
Despite losing Saffold, Missouri State will return 24 players this fall with starting experience from last season and 36 lettermen in all. MSU will begin the 2012 campaign on Sept. 1 at Kansas State and will have five home games on slate this fall, including the Sept. 15 home opener against Murray State under the lights at Plaster Field.
