Kirby Throws for 272 Yards, Defense Has Big Plays in Scrimmage
Junior quarterback Cody Kirby completed 20-of-32 passes for 272 yards and four touchdowns on Saturday morning as the Missouri State football team competed in its third scrimmage of the spring at Plaster Stadium. The Bears' defensive unit also had its share of shining moments, posting three interceptions, compiling three sacks, breaking up a pair of passes and blocking an extra point. Sophomore Colby Broadnax paced the defensive unit with both pass break-ups and an interception. Cedric Alvis and Derek Miller had the other two picks for the MSU defense. The 483 yards total offense produced by Kirby and backup signal caller Lyle Cox produced 5.2 yards per play, more than a yard better than last Friday's 95-play scrimmage. Cox completed 3-of-7 passes for 53 yards and an interception. He also rushed for 31 yards on six carried. Jonathan Davis led the Bears' rushers with 21 carries for 62 yards, while Stephen Johnston got the call nine times and compiled 42 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Miguel Warren accounted for 34 yards on 10 carries with a score. Kirby and Cox hooked up with 10 different receivers, including Ian Starnes who had four catches for 83 yards and a touchdown and Jermaine Saffold who had a game-high five receptions for 54 yards. All-America tight end Clay Harbor also had four receptions, going for 35 yards and a touchdown. Skyler Neale and Chris Givens also had touchdown receptions from Kirby. The Bears wrap up their 15-practice spring schedule next Saturday (April 25) at 1 p.m. for the annual Maroon and White Game at Plaster Field. Admission and parking are free for the event, and all Bears' fans, students, and boosters are encouraged to attend.
