SPRINGFIELD -- Missouri State head football coach Terry Allen announced Friday (Jan. 25) that former Iowa State standout Ben Barkema will join the Bears' coaching staff as an assistant coach.

Barkema, who earned his undergraduate (2007) and master's (2011) from Iowa State, will coach the Missouri State tight ends and also help supervise the Bears' special teams unit.

"Ben will be a great fit in our program," said Allen who begins his eighth year at MSU in 2013. "I coached him at Iowa State, and I'm excited to have him join our staff here."

Barkema was the defensive line coach for Upper Iowa University during the 2012 season. He also assisted with special teams and video coordination there while recruiting the states of Iowa and Wisconsin. His Peacocks' punt return unit ranked third nationally in 2012.

Prior to his time in Fayette, Iowa, Barkema spent three years (2009-2012) at his alma mater as a graduate assistant coach for the ISU Cyclones. In that capacity, he recruited Missouri and Kansas, organized the offensive scout team and worked with the team's linebackers and special teams.  He also spent the 2008 season as an offensive assistant at Iowa State and helped with the team's tight ends and offensive line.  He coached four All-Big 12 players, including 2011 conference defensive player of the year A.J. Klein.

"It's great to be here," said Barkema. "I'm real excited for this opportunity and the chance to work with Coach Allen after having him as a position coach as a player at Iowa State."

A native of Muscatine, Iowa, he started 36 games at tight end for Iowa State from 2003-07, caught 52 passes for 566 yards and scored 4 touchdowns. He played in the Independence Bowl in 2004 and Houston Bowl in 2005 and earned Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll status in the fall of 2006 and spring of 2007.

Allen was Barkema's position coach from 2003-05, while MSU offensive line coach Sean Coughlin was also on the ISU coaching staff for the 2004 and 2005 seasons.

Barkema was later signed by the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent following the 2008 NFL draft.

His hire is subject to formal approval by the Missouri State Board of Governors at its next regularly-scheduled meeting.
