At MSU: Kevin Sears is poised for another standout season at linebacker after ranking second on the team a year ago with 86 tackles. He regained his starting spot in 2005 after missing 2004 due to a broken leg. A team captains as a sophomore, Sears was on the conference all-academic team. He notched four tackles for loss, a sack, two pass breakups, a recovered fumble and a forced fumble. He had 14 tackles at Western Illinois and 12 against Western Kentucky, Indiana State and Southeast Missouri. He started five games in 2003 as one of four true freshmen to earn letters. Sears quickly set himself up as one of the top newcomers in the Gateway, starting the first two games of the year and earning a spot on the league's all-newcomer team. He was named as the top freshman on the 2003 team. Sears was eighth on the team in total tackles with 40 and had two interceptions. He had 10 tackles at Western Kentucky, nine and an interception at Oklahoma State, six at SIU, and five and an interception vs. UNI.Background: Sears was a three-year letterman at Rockhurst, where his team won two state titles and went 36-2 in three seasons. He was named first team all-state and KCPrepFootball.com's Defensive Player of the Year as a senior. Sears set the school record with 10 career interceptions. He led the team his senior year in tackles, scored twice, a fumble recovery, three interceptions and a blocked kick.
