Bears Will Appear on ESPN Package at Least Twice This Season
Oct. 4, 2012
ST. LOUIS -- The Missouri State basketball Bears will appear on the Missouri Valley Conference ESPN package at least twice during the upcoming men's basketball season, the league announced Thursday (Oct. 4).
The MVC package includes a record 48-games on ESPN networks during the 2012-13 academic year, including 30 men's basketball games and select games in volleyball, baseball and women's basketball. ESPN will carry these events on ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPN3.
The Bears will play their first game as part of the package on Sunday, Jan. 27 against Drake at JQH Arena. The game will be featured on ESPNU or ESPN3, which will be finalized at a later date. The selected channel for that game will also dictate the start time, which is currently to be determined.
The Bears then play on ESPN3 on Tuesday, Feb. 5 in a 7 p.m. game at Northern Iowa.
The Valley package with ESPN also includes at least two games to be featured during the Sears BracketBusters series, Feb. 22-24, and the Wildcard Weekend, which is Saturday, March 2. Pairings for those games will also be announced later in the season.
“ESPN’s commitment to The Valley is evident by the quantity and diversity of this package of telecasts,” Valley Commissioner Doug Elgin said. “ESPN provides a national stage for our sports. And the creation and continued expansion of ESPNU as a national platform and the emergence of ESPN3 only heightens the amount of national exposure for our league.”
For the eighth-consecutive season, CBS Sports will air the title game of the MVC Men’s Basketball Championship on Sunday, March 10. CBS, which purchased the rights from ESPN, will televise the Valley Tournament finals through 2016.
MSU's involvement with the MVC/ESPN package also includes quarterfinal and semifinal coverage of the 2012 MVC Volleyball Championship from Hammons Student Center in Springfield (Nov. 22-23), and extended coverage of the 2013 MVC Baseball Championship in Normal, Ill., May 21-24.
The MVC will announce its television package with FOX Sports Midwest in the coming days. The finalization of that schedule will permit The Valley's 10 members to begin finalizing institutional television packages later this month.
MSU enters its third season partnering with KY3, Inc., of Springfield as the official institutional television partner of the Bears and Lady Bears. This year's package will feature nine men's games and eight women's games. Bears TV on KY3 is underwritten by Bass Pro Shops, Chevy Dealers of the Ozarks, Mercy and Great Southern Bank.
