Bears Finalize 2012-13 Men's Basketball Schedule
Aug. 30, 2012
SPRINGFIELD -- With Thursday's (Aug. 30) formal announcement of the 2012-13 Missouri Valley Conference schedule, the Missouri State University men's basketball slate for the upcoming season is now complete.
The Bears will open their 23rd season in the MVC at JQH Arena on Sunday, Dec. 30 at 5:30 p.m. against long-time rival Southern Illinois. The Salukis are now coached by Barry Hinson, who was the Bears' sideline boss from 1999-2008.
MSU will begin January with road games at Evansville and Drake before beginning a two-game home stand Jan. 8 and 11 against Illinois State and Creighton, respectively. Illinois State made an impressive run in the 2012 NIT, while the Blue Jays, who come to Springfield for a rare Friday night league game, were the 2012 MVC regular-season and tournament champions. CU advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament behind the efforts of All-America sophomore Doug McDermott who returns after being named the 2012 Larry Bird MVC Player of the Year.
Late January brings home games against rival and 2012 NCAA Tournament qualifier Wichita State on Jan. 23, and a Sunday contest against Drake on Jan. 27. Road trips to Indiana State (Jan. 16), Bradley (Jan. 19) and a second game with Creighton (Jan. 30) are also part of a busy nine-game January schedule.
Missouri State will have just three home games on an eight-game slate in February. The Bears open the month with a visit from Evansville on Hall of Fame weekend, Feb. 2, before they entertain Indiana State (Feb. 12) and Northern Iowa (Feb. 19). Coach Paul Lusk's troops travel to UNI (Feb. 5), Wichita State (Feb. 9), SIU (Feb. 16), Illinois State (Feb. 27) and to the annual Sears BracketBusters game Feb. 22-24.
The league schedule carries over into March for the first time since 2007-08 with the regular-season finale at JQH Arena against Bradley on March 2. The MVC Tournament returns to Scottrade Center in St. Louis, March 7-10.
In all, the Bears will host three conference games on Tuesday, two on Saturday and two on Sunday with single games on Wednesday and Friday. Including non-conference contests, MSU will have 15 regular-season home games and 17 games at JQH Arena, including a pair of exhibition contests.
Lusk returns five lettermen, three starters and eight squadmen from his inaugural campaign at Missouri State that saw the Bears tie for third place in the ever-competitive MVC. MSU will have five new faces on the squad this winter, plus a pair of redshirt freshmen, when the team begins practice Oct. 13.
Additional start times and television information will be updated at MissouriStateBears.com as details become available.
