Bears and Lady Bears Entertain JQH Fans Before Foreign Tour
Aug. 4, 2012
SPRINGFIELD -- Before the Missouri State Bears and Lady Bears head to Costa Rica next week for their preseason foreign tour, both clubs entertained a healthy crowd at JQH Arena on Saturday afternoon with public practices as part of the 10 sessions allowed by the NCAA for teams bound for international trips.
The Lady Bears scored 81 points in a 22-minute intrasquad scrimmage, including 16 by junior Bry Snow and 12 from classmate Desiree Phillips. Senior Whitney Edie contributed 9 points on the afternoon, as did Hannah Wilkerson who had one of the club's four three-pointers.
The women's portion of the scrimmage include a pair of eight-minute periods, followed by a six-minute period with the players changing sides for different periods.
"We're going to really thankful come October that we had these days," said head coach Nyla Milleson. "We're excited to mix and max Costa Rica with three games in full game situations. Not many people have this opportunity."
All 13 active players scored for the Lady Bears, with Nicole Smallwood and Aly Stock sitting out with injuries.
On the men's side, five players scored in double-figures, led by freshman Gavin Thurman who notched 19 points, including three three-pointers. Christian Kirk, Anthony Downing and redshirt freshman Drew Wilson contributed 12 points apiece, while freshman Marcus Marshall scored 11.
The Bears played two 10-minute periods and then a five-minute period. Junior college transfer Tevin Bracey distributed 8 assists, while Downing added 7, and Keith Pickens led a host of impressive rebounders with 9.
"This was a great experience for our guys, especially for our young guys," said Bears' head coach Paul Lusk. "They got to play in front of a crowd. We'll just continue to come back tomorrow and work hard. We have two practices left, and then we'll leave Tuesday and play Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (in Costa Rica)."
All 12 active players in uniform scored in the scrimmage, and Jarmar Gulley, who tore an ACL in the summer and will have surgery on Aug. 15, was the only player not to see action. Nearly 60 percent of the club’s 105 points were scored by its six freshmen.
