ST. LOUIS -- Missouri State men's basketball standouts Nathan Scheer and Christian Kirk were named to the 13-member Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Team, the league announced Monday (March 11).

Scheer, a junior Construction Management major with a 3.78 grade-point average, was named to the first team, while Kirk, an Information Technology major with a 3.23 GPA, earned second-team distinction.

Joining Scheer on the first team are MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Year Colt Ryan of Evansville, Walt Lemon, Jr. of Bradley, Ehimen Orukpe of Wichita State and Ethan Wragge of Creighton. Along with Kirk, the second team consists of Bradley's Jake Eastman, Indiana State's Lucas Eitel and Justin Gant, Northern Iowa's Austin Pehl and Chip Rank, and Illinois State's Jon Ekey.

This is Scheer's second straight MVC Scholar-Athlete Team selection. The junior from Washington, Mo., earned MVC second-team academic honors a year ago and was recently named to the 2013 MVC All-Bench Team after providing 22.5 minutes per game and knocking down 37 3-pointers this season for the Bears. He was named MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week on Jan. 3 and finished seventh in the conference by making 42.9 percent of his 3-point shots in league play.

Kirk (So., F, Springfield, Mo.) started 25 games for Paul Lusk's squad this season and finished third on the club in scoring with 8.7 points per game to go with 4.2 rebounds and a .521 shooting percentage. He finished sixth among all Valley players in field goal percentage in conference games (.523) and more than doubled his freshman scoring total (114 points) to finish with 279 points this year.

The Bears recently wrapped their 2012-13 campaign with a loss to Wichita State in the MVC Tournament quarterfinals after six wins in their previous 12 games. MSU was 8-7 at home this winter and tied for seventh place in the 10-team league after being picked eighth in the Valley preseason poll.  Scheer and Kirk represent a group of nine lettermen slated to return along with 68 percent of the club's total points.
