SPRINGFIELD -- A 10-0 run by visiting Old Dominion in the last three minutes of the first half has the Monarchs leading the Bears 30-27 at the intermission here in the annual Sears BracketBusters event.
MSU, however, led most of the half until the 1:25 mark when Kent Bazemore dropped in a short jumper from the left block to give ODU a 27-25 advantage. The Bears led by as many as six before that, going ahead 17-11 on a Jarmar Gulley layup with 10:22 to go.
After ODU chipped away to make it a 22-20 game on a trey by Trian Iliadis with just under five minutes to play, Gulley responded again with a three from the left wing to push MSU's lead back to five.
That's when the visitors reeled off 10 straight points over the next three minutes, 14 seconds with Bazemore scoring eight of his game-high 10 in that span, including a pair of three-pointers.
Anthony Downing closed out the half with a leaner just before the horn to make it a 30-27 game.
MSU was 9-for-26 (.346) from the field, 3-of-7 (.429) from bonus distance and a perfect 6-for-6 at the foul line. The Bears own an 18-16 rebounding edge and have just three first-half turnovers.
Gulley has 9 points to lead the Bears, while Kyle Weems has 5.
ODU was 12-for-29 (.414) from the field with 6-of-14 (.429) from three-point range. The Monarchs did not attempts a free throw and had just two turnovers.
MSU is trying to win third straight home game in the BracketBusters series.
