ST. LOUIS - Missouri State freshman Austin Ruder (G, Nixa, Mo.) has been named Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week after he posted 34 points in the Bears' two games last week, the league announced Monday (Feb. 3).
Ruder's remarkable week saw him knock down a total of nine 3-pointers, including a career-best 6-for-9 night effort beyond the arc at Drake on Jan. 29. He posted a team-high and career-high 21 points in the game at Des Moines and answered that by going 3-for-3 from bonus distance in the second half of MSU's Feb. 1 win over Bradley.
For the week, he tallied a team-best 17.0 points per game, knocked down 50-percent of his 3-point shots and shot 52.4 percent of his field goals overall. He retained his MVC lead in 3-pointers per game and also moved into a tie for second on MSU's freshman 3-point field goal list with 53. He now needs just eight more treys to catch Blake Ahearn for the team freshman 3-point record.
Ruder also nudged closer to an elite all-time list of seven MVC freshmen who have knocked down 60 or more 3-pointers in a season. Ruder is Missouri State's second MVC Newcomer of the Week this season after Ron Mvouika (Jr., G/F, Paris, France) earned the honor on Jan. 20.
Also in today's MVC release, MVC Co-Player of the Week honors went to Anthony Beane of Southern Illinois and D.J. Balentine of Evansville.
Coach Paul Lusk's Bears are tied for third place in the Missouri Valley standings and will be back in action at 7:05 p.m., Wednesday at Evansville in a game that will air on KY3-TV locally and the Missouri State Basketball Television Network. The Bears return home on Wednesday, Feb. 12 for a rematch with Drake at 7 p.m. Tickets for the Drake game are available at MissouriStateBears.com/tickets or during regular box office hours (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) at the JQH Arena ticket office or by calling (417) 836-7678.
