Jan. 28, 2013
ST. LOUIS – Missouri State freshman Gavin Thurman (F, Wichita, Kan.) has been named Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week, the league office announced Monday (Jan. 28).
Thurman erupted for a career high and game-high 21 points against his hometown Wichita State club last Wednesday. He tallied 14 points as part of MSU’s 19-0 run against the No. 20 Shockers, the Bears’ best run of consecutive points in the last five seasons. He later helped the Bears snap a four-game league skid with a team-high 7 rebounds in the squad’s win over Drake on Sunday and finished the week averaging 15.0 points and 5.0 rebounds with a team-best five 3-pointers. He also averaged 33.0 minutes and knocked down 45.8 percent of his shots, including 45.5 percent from 3-point range.
Likewise, Thurman was a part of an historic afternoon Sunday at JQH Arena as he helped comprise Missouri State’s first starting lineup to include four freshmen. He joined Marcus Marshall, Drew Wilson and Dorrian Williams as the first Bears’ lineup on record to include four freshmen.
He is MSU’s first Valley Newcomer of the Week this season and is averaging 14.2 points over the last five ball games, including four starts.
Coach Paul Lusk's Bears will open the second half of the league slate at No. 21 Creighton (18-3, 7-2) on Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. start on FOX Sports Midwest and the Valley TV Network. MSU then returns to JQH Arena on Saturday for a 2:05 p.m. grudge match with Evansville on Hall of Fame weekend. Tickets for the Evansville game are available at MissouriStateTix.com, visiting the Chevy Pickup window at JQH Arena during regular box office hours and by phone at (417) 836-7678.
