Hot Aces sting Bears from long range, 84-65
The Evansville Purple Aces sizzled home a dozen three-pointers and scored a season-high point total as they snapped an eight-game losing streak in an 84-65 Missouri Valley Conference basketball victory over the Missouri State Bears Saturday night in Evansville, Ind.
Evansville went ahead to stay midway in the first half and broke the game open after intermission as they won for the first time in nine tries in MVC play this season and climbed to 6-13 overall. Missouri State also reached the midway point in its league schedule and the Bears are now 4-5 in the Valley and 11-10 for the season.
Missouri State lost for the eighth time in a row away from Hammons Student Center and the Bears have yet to win or lose more than one in a row in conference play.
The Bears jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and were last ahead at 13-11 before the Aces, led by junior guard Jason Holsinger, starting firing from long range. The Aces pushed their margin into double digits with a 40-26 halftime advantage and were even hotter from outside the arc after intermission as they led by as many as 25 late in the game.
Evansville finished at .545 (12/22) from three-point range for the night and 54 percent overall, while the Bears connected on just 37 percent from the field for the contest. Evansville also had a 38-35 rebound advantage. Holsinger nailed six treys in the game and finished with a career-high 28 points. Shy Ely was also near his best career game as he threw in 17.
Justin Fuehrmeyer and Dale Lamberth led the Bears with 14 points each in the contest while Spencer Laurie and Deven Mitchell scored 10 each.
The Bears stay on the road for their next outing, a Valley game Tuesday (Jan. 29) at Wichita State. Tipoff is 8:05 p.m.
