Mvouika Named Valley Newcomer of the Week
Jan. 20, 2014
ST. LOUIS – Missouri State junior Ron Mvouika (G/F, Paris, France) was named Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week late Monday (Jan. 20) after his record-setting performance in the Bears’ game at Northern Iowa on Saturday.
In his first career start, Mvouika tallied a game-high 28 points at UNI, including a Missouri State record 6-for-6 effort from 3-point range. He finished 10-for-13 (.769) from the field overall and matched a team-high with 4 assists while playing a career-high 35 minutes.
The transfer from Sheridan (Wyo.) College tallied the most points by an MSU player since Kyle Weems scored 31 at Creighton on Dec. 28, 2011 and posted the most points by a Bears' newcomer since Adam Leonard scored 29 at Southern Illinois on Feb. 3, 2010.
Mvouika's 3-point production catapulted MSU to its best game from beyond the arc -- 12 3-pointers -- since the 2011 NIT second round game at Miami (Fla.). The effort also pushed Mvouika into a tie for second place in the conference rankings in 3-point percentage (.545) in Valley games.
Mvouika also registered a career-high 6 rebounds in a reserve appearance at Indiana State earlier in the week to go with 7 points against the Sycamores. He is Missouri State’s first Newcomer of the Week since then-freshman Gavin Thurman won the award on Jan. 28, 2013.
Also in today’s MVC release, Northern Iowa’s Seth Tuttle was named MVC Player of the Week.
Coach Paul Lusk’s Bears are back in action at JQH Arena on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m., in a key conference game against Evansville. The Bears also host rival Southern Illinois on Saturday at 7 p.m., in a game televised on FOX Sports Midwest. Tickets for both games are available at MissouriStateBears.com/tickets or during regular box office hours (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) at the JQH Arena ticket office or by calling (417) 836-7678.
