Missouri State returns to JQH Arena Wednesday night to take on visiting Southern Illinois in Missouri Valley Conference play as the Bears put a seven-game winning streak and 17-game home winning streak on the line against the rival Salukis.
MSU (13-3, 5-0) sits alone atop the MVC standings after a thrilling 59-56 win at Wichita State on Sunday night. The win was the Bears' first in Wichita since 2007 and snapped the Shockers' 18-game league win streak at Koch Arena. Adam Leonard (Sr., G, Lee's Summit, Mo.) knocked down a three-pointer with three-and-a-half minutes to play to stop an 11-0 WSU run and give the Bears the lead for good. That shot was the last field goal of the game, and the Bears would make three free throws down the stretch to seal the win. Leonard, Kyle Weems (Jr., F, Topeka, Kan.) and Jermaine Mallett (Sr., G, Jackson, Miss.) all shared team-high scoring honors with 11 apiece, while Will Creekmore (Sr., C, Tulsa, Okla.) had 9 points and 10 rebounds.
Southern Illinois (7-6, 3-2) comes to Springfield with wins in three of its last four games, including a 63-59 home win over Illinois State on Sunday. Coach Chris Lowery's team is 3-4 away from SIU Arena this season and its only blemish over the last four league games is a 72-66 overtime loss in Carbondale to Creighton last Friday.
SIU leads the all-time series, 39-28, with the Bears having won four of their last six in Springfield against the Salukis.
