At Missouri State

Deven Mitchell's performance last season as a fourth-year junior was nothing less than spectacular as he shook off recurring injury problems to provide a much-needed spark for the Bears in game after game. He goes into his final Missouri State campaign as a senior co-captain and is once again prepared to fill whatever role is needed to help the Bears win ballgames. When healthy, Mitchell is a gifted athlete with an arsenal of spectacular moves and has been a popular crowd favorite in Hammons Student Center since his days at Kickapoo High School.

Mitchell gave the Bears a courageous year as he finished second on the team in scoring, rebounding, free throw accuracy and minutes played and third in field goal shooting. His performance earned him selection as the Missouri Valley Conference Sixth Man of the Year despite a season in which he was only able to practice a portion of the time and put up the numbers he did while coming off the bench in 31 of 33 games. Mitchell had his best efforts in big games last year, starting with a 13-point, 10-rebound effort in the Bears' upset of No. 7 Wisconsin. He had 18 points and 7 rebounds in the win over '07 NCAA tourney club UW-Milwaukee. He had 10 points and 8 boards in the Bears' road win at South Florida when teammate Nathan Bilyeu was out of action. Mitchell scored 19 in the Bears' home win over Wichita State, the first triumph over the Shockers in five years. He scored 21 in the BracketBusters loss to Winthrop, averaged 17.5 points and 8 rebounds in the Bears' two games in the State Farm MVC Tourney, and scored 16 in the NIT loss to San Diego State. At one point he hit 24 free throws in a row to get a spot in the top 11 streaks in that stat and had solid shooting from the field all year. He scored in double figures in 19 ballgames.

Redshirted during with a variety of injuries and practiced on a very limited basis.

Mitchell's three starts as a sophomore all came early in the campaign. He scored in double figures four times, getting 15 points in the Bears' home win over Evansville and 14 in the home win over Southern Illinois. Mitchell was second on the team in steals and was just two behind team leader Tamarr Maclin despite playing 200 fewer minutes than Maclin. Mitchell had six steals in the home win over Illinois State (2/26), the Bears' individual high for the season. His top two rebound efforts came vs. Creighton.

Mitchell got off to a strong start as one of four Bears to earn letters as true freshmen. He got into 32 games with 11 starts as his numbers improved steadily. He had double digits in minutes played 25 times. He had a season-high 11 points vs. UNI (1/11) and scored 10 in four other games. His top overall outings came in the State Farm MVC tournament at the end of the year. After scoring 10 points at Bradley in the regular season finale, he then averaged 8.3 points and 8.3 rebounds in three tourney games, and was the top rebounder in the meet.

Mitchell helped coach Roy Green's Springfield Kickapoo club to a state title as a senior as the 30-1 Chiefs were among the nation's top 15 teams by USA TODAY. In four years at KHS, Mitchell's Chiefs were 100-18, including four Ozark Conference crowns. He was on the all-state first team, and was all-conference for the third time. Mitchell averaged 14.4 points and 6.4 rebounds a game as a senior and 14.2 points and 7.2 rebounds as a junior to win second-team all-state. Over Mitchell's four years at KHS, he played 20 games in Hammons, including three visits to the Bass Pro Tourney of Champs. He was on the Bass Pro all-tourney team in 2003.

Deven Anthony Mitchell was born Oct. 22, 1984, in St. Louis, Mo., the son of John and Mary Mitchell. Deven is majoring in hospitality and restaurant administration.
