Detwiler reaches contract agreement with Washington Nationals

Missouri State junior left-handed pitcher Ross Detwiler, the sixth overall pick in June’s MLB First-Year Player Draft, has reached an agreement with the Washington Nationals and will begin his professional career this weekend in Viera, Fla., as part of the Gulf Coast League Nationals.

The highest draft pick ever chosen from Missouri State and second-highest ever from the Missouri Valley Conference, Detwiler will be in Washington, D.C., tonight to throw out the ceremonial first pitch when the Nationals take on Milwaukee at 7:05 p.m. ET.

According to Washington general manager Jim Bowden, the Nationals plan for Detwiler to make stops in Class A Potomac, Double-A Harrisburg and potentially the big leagues by September of this season.

At Missouri State, the southpaw ranks fourth in school history with 244 strikeouts and eighth with a career ERA of 3.12 in 216 innings. He had a 2.22 ERA and 110 strikeouts this spring as MSU’s ace.
