Becker, Smith Tabbed for MVC Scholar-Athlete Honors
June 4, 2014
ST. LOUIS - Missouri State's Dylan Becker and Conor Smith have been named to the Missouri Valley Conference Baseball Scholar-Athlete First Team, released Wednesday by the conference office. The two MSU infielders are part of a group of 17 Valley players honored by the league's sports information directors for their work on the field and in the classroom.
Becker made all 57 starts at third base for the Bears in 2014, reaching base safely in 49 and logging 17 multi-hit efforts to rank second on the team. The junior batted .266 with 59 hits, 26 runs scored, 12 doubles, two homers, 30 RBIs and 14 steals--all career highs--and ranked seventh in the MVC in stolen bases and 10th in triples (2). A Leawood, Kan., product, Becker hit a club-best .444 (8-for-18) with five RBIs and three steals at the MVC Championship as part of a career-long seven-game hit streak to close the season, over which he batted .385 (10-for-26) with seven RBIs.
A two-time MVC Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award winner and Honor Roll selectee, Becker's selection as an MVC Scholar-Athlete is his second in as many years. He logged a 3.92 GPA in the spring semester and has a 3.87 cumulative mark as an entertainment management major.
Smith, who was an honorable mention MVC Scholar-Athlete as a junior, played in 49 games, including 36 combined starts at first base and DH for the Bears this spring. He posted a .983 fielding percentage while hitting .258 and matching or surpassing career-best totals for hits (34), runs (13), doubles (8), homers (2) and RBIs (16). A Ballwin, Mo., native, Smith recorded at least one hit or one RBI in each of MSU's first seven games of the season.
A 2014 Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-District 6 pick, as well as a 2013 MVC Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award winner and three-time MVC Commissioner's Honor Roll selectee, Smith graduated cum laude from Missouri State in May with a 3.54 GPA, completing his bachelor's degree in cell and molecular biology with minors in French and chemistry.
To qualify for consideration for the MVC Scholar-Athlete Team, players must have a minimum 3.20 grade-point average and be a starter or key reserve. The team is voted on each year by the league's eight sports information directors.
