Medrano, Petree Earn MSU Baseball Team Awards
SPRINGFIELD -- Kevin Medrano and Nick Petree are this year’s winners of Missouri State’s baseball team awards as voted on by their teammates. Medrano is the A.E. “Ted” Willis Most Valuable Player, while Petree is both the Dave Dickensheet Pitcher of the Year and the Danny Cook Rookie of the Year.
Medrano is the team MVP for a second consecutive season and is the fourth player at MSU to win the award multiple times. The junior second baseman from Lee’s Summit, Mo., earned all-Missouri Valley Conference first-team honors for a third time this season and finished the year with a .325 batting average, 34 RBIs, 34 runs scored and 13 steals. Beginning April 1, Medrano batted .376 over the season’s final 33 games. He finished his junior season ranked sixth in school history with 409 assists, seventh with 179 singles and 11th with 86 double plays turned in his career.
Petree is the MVC Freshman of the Year and a second-team all-conference pick. The Clinton, Mo., native went 9-2 with a 2.81 ERA, setting MSU freshman records for wins and innings (96) while ranking third among that group with 81 strikeouts. Petree held opponents to a .236 batting average while tossing at least six innings in all 11 starts. He also picked up two saves in five relief appearances early in the year while throwing two complete games.
