Southern Illinois Hangs On For 6-5 Win Over Baseball Bears
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Southern Illinois designated hitter Tyler Bullock went 3-for-4 with five RBIs to lead the visiting Salukis to a 6-5 Missouri Valley Conference baseball win over Missouri State Friday evening at Hammons Field in Springfield.
Bullock hit a solo homer in the seventh to put the Salukis (28-26, 10-9) ahead for good at 6-5. He hit a two-run single in the first and a two-run homer in the fourth, and along with Blake Pinnon’s RBI single in the second, SIU built a 5-0 lead before the Bears struck for a tying five-spot in the bottom of the sixth.
The Bears (19-32, 5-15) got a leadoff homer from Curt Courtwright to lead off the sixth and Tyler Ryun and Christian Overstreet added RBI singles before an SIU error on the potential third out allowed a fourth run to score and prolonged the inning. Aaron Conway followed with a two-out double for the 5-5 tie.
Missouri State threatened in the eighth but stranded runners on first and second, and did the same in the ninth as SIU closer Bryant George managed a pair of strikeouts for his seventh save.
SIU’s Lee Weld (5-4) pitched two scoreless relief innings for the win. Pierce Johnson (1-2) was stuck with the loss, allowing only Bullock’s seventh-inning homer in three innings.
Aaron Meade pitched five innings in the start and struck out eight. He moved to third in MSU history with his 40th career start, eighth with 222 strikeouts and 10th with 221.1 innings pitched.
MSU closes the regular season Saturday at 2 p.m. against the Salukis. Seniors Curt Courtwright, Pat Doyle, Christian Overstreet and Sean Toler will be honored prior to the game at 1:40 p.m.
