Bears Snag 6-5 Extra-Inning Win From SIU In Regular-Season Finale
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Aaron Conway’s two-out single in the 10th inning drove in Christian Overstreet as the game-winning run to give the Missouri State baseball team a 6-5 win over Southern Illinois in the regular-season finale Saturday afternoon at Hammons Field.
The Bears (20-32, 6-15 Missouri Valley Conference) trailed 3-0 after SIU batted in the fourth and got on the scoreboard in the home half of that inning when a throwing error by SIU’s third baseman allowed Tyler Ryun to score after a leadoff single.
Missouri State came back to tie after Curt Courtwright led off the fifth with a double and the seventh with a walk and scored two runs on RBI hits by Keenen Maddox. MSU added two more in the seventh for a 5-3 lead when Travis McComack pulled a sharp grounder off of the diving first baseman’s glove for an RBI single, and a second run came in to score when the first baseman recovered on the play but threw wildly to first.
The Salukis (28-27, 10-10) tied it on Tyler Bullock’s two-run homer in the ninth before Overstreet hit a leadoff single between third and shortstop in the 10th, was sacrificed to second and stole third to set up Conway’s game-winner.
Senior Pat Doyle pitched 6.1 innings in the start before handing a 3-3 game to Grant Gordon (3-2) in the seventh. Gordon pitched the final 3.2 frames and struck out five for the win.
The Bears travel to Wichita next week for the State Farm MVC Tournament. Missouri State will open against top-seeded Wichita State at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Fourth-seeded Southern Illinois and No. 5 Evansville will join the Bears and the Shockers in that half of the bracket.
