Leading Off
The 2013 MVC Baseball Championship will make its first trip to Normal, Ill., as Valley regular-season champ Illinois State will host the five-day league meet this week at Duffy Bass Field. The tournament, which begins with four games Tuesday (May 21) and continues through Saturday's championship game, will determine the winner of the Valley's automatic NCAA Tournament bid.

The Missouri State Bears (31-22, 12-9 MVC) earned the No. 4 seed in this year's championship, and will take No. 5 Evansville (23-33, 10-10 MVC) in a rematch of the two clubs' opening-round contest Thursday (May 23) at 12:37 p.m. The Bears rallied for two runs in the ninth inning Tuesday to post a come-from-behind 2-1 win over the Aces, before dropping a 6-1 decision to host Illinois State Wednesday evening.

This year's tournament format is in its fourth season of splitting the league's eight schools in-to a pair of four-team, double-elimination brackets with a one game championship set for 7:07 p.m. Saturday. Joining the Bears in their half of the bracket will be the host and top-seeded Redbirds, No. 5 Evansville and No. 8 Bradley.

The Bears, who have won the tournament title on two previous occasions (1996 and 1997), are 37-40 in 22 trips to the MVC Tournament. MSU has five runner-up finishes (1995, 2002, 2006 and 2008) and went 2-2 at last year's championship as the host institution.
