Petree Named MVC Pitcher of the Week
May 13, 2013
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Following the latest in a long line of record-setting performances, junior pitcher Nick Petree picked up his second Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week award of the season Monday, the league office announced.
In perhaps his final home start in a Missouri State uniform, Petree kept his perfect Hammons Field record intact with a complete-game, 10-strikeout effort to beat Wright State and stop the Bears' six-game losing streak Friday. Petree (8-1) permitted just three hits -- none after the fourth inning -- to improve to 12-0 in 18 appearances as a Bear at Hammons Field.
The right-hander equaled Pierce Johnson's MSU record of four-straight double-digit strikeout efforts and became the first pitcher in school history to top the 100-strikeout barrier in consecutive seasons. Petree cruised home by retiring 15 of the final 16 hitters he faced to finish off the 6-1 win and his second complete game of the season.
The weekly Valley honor is the fifth for Petree, who claimed the same honor on April 1 of this year and three times in 2012 en route to earning MVC Pitcher of the Year and first-team All-America recognition. The redshirt junior leads the Valley in strikeouts (100), innings pitched (87.0) and wins (eight) and ranks second in earned run average (1.55).
Missouri State (29-19, 11-7 MVC) will wrap up the regular season on the road with its final Missouri Valley Conference series against Creighton, beginning with a 12:30 p.m. contest Thursday (May 16) at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha.
