Perez Named MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week
April 2, 2014
ST. LOUIS - After leading Missouri State to victories in both of his relief outings last week, Bears sophomore pitcher Sam Perez has been selected Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced Wednesday. Perez, along with Bradley's Kristen Busch, was honored for his performance during the period of March 24-30.
Perez came up big for Missouri State in two appearances out of the Bears' bullpen last week, allowing just one run on six hits while striking out nine and walking none over 11.1 innings to earn his first two collegiate victories. The right-hander worked a career-long 8 1/3 innings to earn his first win as a Bear last Wednesday vs. Arkansas State before topping off MSU's MVC series win over Southern Illinois with three shutout innings to notch a second victory.
After entering Wednesday's game in the first inning, the Branson, Mo., product allowed just two hits over the next seven frames, including a stretch in which he retired 10 ASU hitters in a row. He would keep ASU off the scoreboard until a one-out double in the ninth before locking down the 5-4 victory by inducing a pair of ground balls. In MSU's 6-5 win over SIU Sunday, Perez picked up right where he left off against ASU, yielding just two singles while fanning three Salukis in 3.0 scoreless frames to help set the stage for MSU's first walk-off win of the season in the bottom of the 10th inning.
A cell and molecular biology major, Perez was named to the 2013 MVC Commissioner's Honor Roll and maintains a 3.24 GPA.
To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.
Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
Missouri State travels to Tulsa this evening for a 6:30 p.m. game with Oral Roberts before enjoying its lone off weekend of the regular season. The Bears (13-14) return to action against Missouri on April 8 with a 6 p.m. game at Taylor Stadium in Columbia.
