Medrano Adds to Bears' Honor Roll with MVC Player of the Week Selection
April 2, 2012
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Kevin Medrano became the third Missouri State baseball player in as many weeks and the fourth Bear this season to earn a Missouri Valley Conference weekly honor Monday, when the league announced his selection as State Farm MVC Player of the Week for the period March 26-April 1.
Medrano follows in the footsteps of MSU teammates Nick Petree (March 19) and Pierce Johnson (March 26), who claimed each of the last two MVC Pitcher of the Week citations, as well as fellow Bear senior infielder Brent Seifert, who picked up MVC Player of the Week honor on March 5.
In four games last week, Medrano was red-hot at the plate, hitting a team-high .600 (9-for-15) to raise his season average 50 points. The Bears' senior second baseman started his week with a season-best four hits in six trips to the plate versus Kansas (March 27), including the game-winning, bases-loaded single in the bottom of the ninth inning. He also scored twice in the 9-8 win, before going 5-for-9 with five walks, four runs scored and a steal over the course of MSU's three-game series at Dallas Baptist. Medrano climbed into ninth place on the Bears' all-time hits list with his third multi-hit game of the week Sunday, and capped a perfect defensive week in which he completed 22 fielding chances without an error and assisted on a pair of double plays to move up to seventh on the MSU career list.
Medrano, who enters the week second on the team with a .308 batting mark, has steadily improved his average over the last two weeks after hitting just .247 over his first 18 games of the season. Since March 20, the Lee's Summit, Mo., product has hit a team-best .481 (13-of-27) to raise his average 61 points.
For Medrano, the award is the third MVC weekly honor of his Missouri State career, following his selection as player of the week on April 5, 2010, and May 9, 2011.
