Baseball Bears Grab 9-1 Win Over Western Illinois in Series Opener
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Missouri State scored in five of its eight at bats Friday and did not allow an earned run for the second consecutive game in a 9-1 non-conference baseball victory over Western Illinois at Hammons Field.
Grant Gordon (2-2) allowed three hits and an unearned run in six innings to earn the victory, and J.C. Casey pitched three scoreless innings for the save, including striking out the side after loading the bases with nobody out in the ninth.
Offensively, Kevin Medrano had three RBIs and Aaron Conway scored three times while going 3-for-5.
Brock Chaffin scored on a balk in the second to put MSU ahead for good, and Medrano drove in Conway with a single in the third before scoring on Luke Voit’s sacrifice fly for a 3-0 score.
Conway’s one-out RBI single and Medrano’s sacrifice fly made it a 5-0 game in the fourth, and WIU’s lone run came on Chris Giglio’s sacrifice fly in the sixth.
Brent Seifert plated Medrano with a double in the seventh, and the Bears got an RBI single from Spiker Helms and Medrano’s second sac fly of the game in the eighth before Conway scored on a wild pitch for the 9-1 final.
Travis McComack also had two hits and scored twice for the Bears, while the pitching staff extending its streak to 26.2 innings without yielding an earned run.
The Bears (10-8) and Leathernecks (2-14) meet again at 2 p.m. Saturday.
