Team Lawson Claims Fall World Series with Game 5 Victory

Oct. 18, 2011

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Team Lawson used a two-run double by Brock Chaffin and five shutout innings from Pierce Johnson to take command of the decisive contest of the Missouri State baseball team's annual fall world series, cruising to a 4-2 win in Game 5 and a three-games-to-two series victory.

Kevin Medrano singled twice and scored a pair of runs, including the first of the ball game on Chaffin's two-run double to left in the first inning that staked Lawson's club to a 2-0 lead.

Johnson would not need much help on the offensive side, as the junior right-hander gave up just one hit in five innings, striking-out five and walking three before yielding to his bullpen.

Lawson's squad added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth, with Medrano once again playing the role of catalyst. The senior infielder led-off with a base hit, then came around on Eric Cheray's RBI double. After Cheray was thrown out a third attempting to stretch his two-base hit into a triple, Brent Seifert drew a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch, stole third and scored on a throwing error by the catcher.

Despite surrendering the two sixth-inning runs, Clay Murphy turned in a solid effort for Team Overstreet, fanning nine hitters and scattering four hits over his four innings of work.

Overstreet's club got on the board in the sixth courtesy of a Jacob Hall solo shot, then added an unearned run the following inning to pull to within two runs.

Three relievers combined to hold the lead for Team Lawson, highlighted by Cody Schumacher's one-two-three ninth that included a pair of strikeouts.

Medrano capped a torrid fall campaign that saw him hit .720 (18-for-25) with a 2-for-4 performance Monday, while Chaffin went 2-for-3.

Hall finished the day 2-for-3 to lead Team Overstreet.
