At MSU: Jeff Sargent is the incumbent at fullback for the Bears and is expected to hold down that spot again in 2008. He's served primarily in a blocking role in the new Bears' offense the past two years, but had five catches for 45 yards in the annual spring game in April. He had six receptions last season with three coming against UNI and one each vs. Kansas State, Western Illinois and Southern Illinois. He also returned four kickoffs for 25 yards. In the classroom, he was named to the Missouri Valley Football Conference Honor Roll. Sargent enjoyed a solid season in 2005 as a true freshman. He had two starts and was slowed by a late injury but was steady the rest of the way. His top game was at Youngstown State, where he rushed once for 12 yards and had three catches for 15 yards. Sargent spent the spring of 2007 as a pitcher on the Bears' baseball team, going 1-0 in eight appearances as a reliever.
Background: Sargent earned second team all-conference and all-state football honors, as well as being twice named all-metro and all-state in baseball at Francis Howell. He was also a baseball All-American.
